Little is known about Babe's past, save that she grew up with little money and big dreams. Babe met JR Chandler when the steamer he had been working on docked in San Diego. There was instant attraction between the two, and three weeks later they were married. Babe returned to Pine Valley with JR, where she had a brief one night stand with his brother Jamie, both unaware of the other's identity. Jamie was shocked the next day when Babe was introduced as JR's wife.

JR's father Adam believed Babe was a gold digger and set out to prove so, while Babe struggled to keep her one night stand with Jamie quiet. Adam had Babe investigated and discovered that she had befriended many young men on a local base in San Diego, including one Paul Cramer. Unknown to all, Babe was actually married to Paul (a resident of Llanview), as she never filed their annulment papers. Babe also announced that she was pregnant, which thrilled JR. Jamie, however, began to suspect the baby was his.

Eventually, JR learned Jamie and Babe had met before the dinner party where JR had introduced them. Babe claimed Jamie hit on her, while Jamie said they slept together. Despite Adam's attempts to convince JR otherwise, JR chose to believe his wife. Convinced that Babe's child was really his and that JR was wrong for her, Jamie threatened a lawsuit. Babe revealed to her newly arrived mother, Krystal, that being placed on the stand could be devastating-and presented her mother with the annulment papers (for her marriage to Paul) that Babe never filed. Krystal vowed to keep them hidden until Adam cooled off, at which point they could be processed. Eventually Babe confessed to JR she had once been married to Paul, but she lied and told her husband the marriage was annulled.

Suspicious of his wife, JR engineered a meeting between Babe and Jamie where he learned that they did sleep together. Furious, he demanded a paternity test. Babe took the test, but feared that Jamie might be named the father. With (false) promises of sex and Chandler money, Babe managed to convince Medevac Paul to ensure that the test results named JR as the father. When the results were read weeks later, JR was listed as the father of Babe's unborn child. Paul never told Babe whether JR truly was the father or the results had to be changed. Soon after, Babe told Paul her promise of money and sex was null and void: she wanted nothing to do with him.

Blissful with the thought of having a child, JR once again treated Babe with kindness and affection. Desperately in love with her husband, Babe secretly wondered whether JR would still love her if the baby was not his. Regardless, Babe happily prepared for the birth of her child.

Along with her close friend Bianca Montgomery, Babe was caught in a remote cabin during a flash flood. Bianca went into labor and Babe helped deliver Bianca's daughter, Miranda. Babe went off to get help, only to begin labor herself. Finding a phone, Babe managed to call the hospital and got a hold of Paul, quickly rattling off her location before labor pains forced her off the phone. Babe returned to the cabin, where Bianca had passed out due to post-labor complications. Paul arrived and helped Babe deliver a baby boy. Shortly after, Paul drugged Babe (claiming it was procedure) and gave the boy to his sister, Kelly Cramer (who was desperate for a baby but unable to conceive). Kelly, who named the boy Ace, returned to Llanview (and One Life To Live) with him.

Paul faked a helicopter crash and told a drugged Babe that her child died. However, when Adam, JR and others came upon the scene and threatened Paul, he panicked and announced that Bianca's baby had died-and that baby Miranda was Babe's daughter! Babe, who was unconscious due to infection, couldn't confirm or deny. JR named the little girl Bess.

Babe was rushed to the hospital, where Krystal and JR gleefully told the unconscious Babe that she had given birth to a healthy baby girl. Paul soon visited Babe and confirmed Krystal and JR's assurances that she had a baby girl. Babe, with a hazy memory of the birth thanks to her infection and Paul's drugs, believed this. Krystal privately worried that Babe's baby had died and Bess was really Miranda, a situation Paul surely created. Krystal's boyfriend Tad Martin shared her suspicions, and performed a covert DNA test to get the truth. Krystal, fearful that her instinct was correct and wanting to prevent Babe the pain of losing a child, switched the result labels. When the results were read and Bess was proven to be Babe's daughter, it confirmed for Krystal that Bess was Miranda. Krystal kept the truth from Babe.

Krystal managed to get the annulment from Paul finalized. Babe suggested to JR that they renew their vows at Bess's christening, which would mean that Babe would be legally married to JR. A vindictive Liza Colby revealed to JR that Babe had lied about her annulment to Paul and that it had only been recently processed. Unbeknownst to Babe, JR was furious and decided to raise Bess by himself. Realizing the best way to do this was to marry Babe and then prove her an unfit mother, JR kept his true feelings hidden and agreed to renew his vows (and legally marry) Babe.

Babe eventually realized her son had died and that she had Miranda. Torn, Babe feared telling JR the truth, knowing that the loss of his beloved Bess and his son would be devastating. Her love for JR was so great that she chose him over Bianca. Ironically, Babe didn't realize JR was plotting against her to get Bess for himself. Babe made Bianca Bess's godmother, and told Bianca she would always be a huge part of Bess's life. According to Babe, Bianca would be Bess's mother, just as much as Babe was. Bianca was touched at the generous gesture of her friend, while Babe drowned in her own guilt, resolute in her determination not to hurt her beloved husband.

David Hayward soon discovered the truth about Miranda and threatened to tell the authorities. Krystal, in a desperate attempt to buy time to leave town, told David that he couldn't turn them in to the cops, because Babe was his daughter. To quiet Krystal, David agreed to a DNA test with Babe. Krystal told Babe she lied to David, and made plans to leave town, urging Babe to deny any knowledge that Bess was Miranda. Babe and Krystal were shocked when David came back with the results that proved that Babe truly was his daughter. Years ago, Krystal and David had a drunken one night stand at a party, and the result was Babe. David cared for Bianca and wanted Miranda with her, but felt he was given a second chance to be a parent (his infant daughter died the previous year). He didn't turn Babe over to the police.

In an effort to get Babe to sleep with Jamie as fodder for sole custody of Bess, JR drugged Babe's drink one night in hopes of lowering her inhibitions. Babe ended up overdosing, and nearly died. David tried to convince Babe that JR drugged her, but Babe refused to believe it. She loved JR, and couldn't believe he would hurt her. It would have made keeping the truth from Bianca pointless, something Babe couldn't face.

Jamie was also determined to prove JR was trying to harm Babe. Despite her protests, Babe was touched by Jamie's devotion and concern. When Jamie was stabbed after trying to get information from JR's possible drug dealer, Babe began to realize that maybe her husband did hate her. She confided in Bianca, and they set up a scheme to test JR's true feelings. They made it appear as if they were having an affair, which JR discovered. JR reacted gleefully, telling Babe he hated her and would use her extramarital affair to gain custody of Bess. With no reason to keep Miranda from Bianca, Babe prepared to tell her the truth when David told her that JR had whisked Bess away to a secret location. To tell Bianca the truth while Bess was away would risk JR fleeing with the baby, never to be found again.

Tad and David eventually found Bess, and Babe gathered her strength to tell Bianca everything. She got lost in a storm and ended up in Llanview, where she encountered Kevin Buchanan (ex-husband of Kelly Cramer) and his son Ace. Babe felt an instant, maternal connection to the boy. Talking with Kevin, she learned of Ace's connection to Paul and became convinced that Ace was her son. Rushing home to Pine Valley, Babe shocked everyone when she said she wanted to reconcile with JR, for Bess's sake. Later, Babe privately confided to David and Krystal that she suspected that Ace was her son, stolen by Paul at birth. Babe wanted to reclaim her son and give Miranda back, but David warned her that to do that, she would only be incriminating herself and would end up losing Ace. David did a covert DNA test on Ace, which proved that he was Babe's son, but it also confirmed that JR was the father. David told Babe that he would think of a plan which would allow Babe to have her son, get Miranda back to Bianca all while not incriminating anyone but Paul.

Jamie became suspicious of Babe's sudden decision to reconcile with JR. Knowing that her change of heart came while she was in Llanview, Jamie did some digging, and slowly put the pieces together about the baby switch. Jamie confronted Babe, who admitted everything, including her desire to return Miranda to Bianca. Jamie surprised her by telling her he understood and suggested that they kidnap Ace and go on the run. Babe agreed to the idea, touched by Jamie's support. The two grew closer.

JR was also suspicious of Babe's change of heart, and doctored a security tape that made it appear as if Babe and Jamie had tried to pay off someone to kill JR. JR threatened to turn the tape over to the cops and send Jamie to jail unless Babe signed over custody of Bess. Babe signed away Bess as she made her preparations to leave town and tell Bianca the truth. Bianca questioned Babe's decision to give up custody, but Babe assured her friend that everything would make sense in the end.

Babe and Jamie left for Llanview, where they kidnapped Ace. They began a life on the run, adopting the names Brad and Kate Anderson. Babe renamed Ace, calling him James, after Jamie. Feelings between the two deepened.

Prior to leaving town, Babe had left notes for JR and Bianca, which revealed that JR and Babe's son had died and that Bess was Miranda. JR got his first, read it and refused to believe it was true. Before Bianca could read hers, he burned her letter. Babe soon realized that Bianca did not know the truth, and decided she needed to tell Bianca face to face, to make sure nothing went wrong. She called Bianca and told her to make sure that JR and Bess accompanied her to the Miranda Montgomery charity concert in Florida. There, Babe would meet up with Bianca. Bianca assumed that Babe was going to kidnap Bess away from JR, and gladly supported her friend.

In Florida, Jamie distracted JR while Babe got Bianca alone. There, she confessed Bess was Miranda. She told Bianca the whole baby switch saga, including that her son was alive and that Babe had kidnapped him. After some disbelief, Bianca realized Babe was telling the truth. Furious with Babe for deceiving her for so long, Bianca slapped her and ordered her out of her life. Jamie, Babe and baby James went back on the road, fearful that Bianca told JR the truth about his son being alive.

Kelly Cramer, who had been searching for the kidnapped Ace, caught up with Babe and Jamie. Kelly had come to realize that her son was stolen at birth (not given up by a mother that didn't want him, as Paul told her), and realized that Babe was his biological mother. Kelly tearfully bid goodbye to Ace/James, promising to keep Babe and Jamie's whereabouts hidden.

Jamie and Babe declared their love for each other and made love. JR discovered that his son was alive and that Babe had him. Tad tracked Jamie and Babe and warned them that JR knew about James and was trying to find them. Jamie and Babe attempted to flee the country, but were intercepted by JR and, along with Tad, arrested for kidnapping. Babe also faced the failure to return a child charges that were pending because of her role in keeping Miranda from Bianca.

Kevin, who had legal guardianship of James until a custody trial could be set, swore to keep the child from JR. Babe, despite the criminal charges against her, decided to fight for her son. She came forward with the DNA test that proved she was James's biological mother. However, the test also revealed JR was the father, giving him further leverage in a custody battle.

At the trial, Kevin gave up his claim to James and advocated Babe be awarded custody. Kelly managed to get the kidnapping charges dropped when she lied on the stand that she had given Babe permission to take James (thus making Babe not guilty of kidnapping). Bianca shocked Babe and everyone when she took the stand and, despite her anger at Babe, advocated that James would be better off with Babe than with JR. With the little boy's best interest at heart, Bianca agreed to a deal that dropped all charges against Babe for failing to return Miranda, in exchange for a jail sentence for Krystal.

Despite this, JR was awarded custody of his son, whom he renamed Adam Chandler III (or "Little Adam"). Babe was awarded three hours of supervised visitation a week. Jamie, deeply committed to Babe, proposed to her but Babe declined. She told Jamie that she had made so many poor choices that she wanted to take time and prove to herself and everyone that she was worthy of marrying Jamie. The two moved in together and decided to revisit the marriage question in six months. JR, meanwhile, swore to never stop making Babe and Jamie pay for keeping his son from him. He got Jamie kicked out of college, and used his influence to make sure that Jamie was not accepted into any other local area colleges. To make ends meet, Babe took a job as a bartender while Jamie worked as a mechanic.

In her will, Jamie's Great Aunt Phoebe Wallingford revealed that Jamie had confided in her his dreams of becoming a doctor. She left her entire estate, and guaranteed entrance to medical school, on the condition that Jamie dump "that baby stealing harlot" Babe. Worse, JR was left as the person to judge whether Jamie fulfilled the conditions of the will. JR told Babe he would only back off his quest to ruin Jamie's life if Babe and Jamie split up. Babe, guilt ridden and feeling as if she was holding Jamie back, offered to leave him so that Jamie could pursue a college career. Jamie refused to leave Pine Valley (where Babe was tied because of her son) and committed himself to Babe.

Babe befriended Jamie's childhood friend Amanda Dillon, unaware that she was being employed by JR to break up Jamie and Babe. Babe later learned of Amanda's plot and distanced herself from her supposed "best friend."

Babe was hopeful with the reappearance of JR's presumed dead mother, Dixie. Babe wanted Dixie, the only person that JR would listen to, to engender peace between JR and Jamie. While visiting Krystal in prison, Babe was shocked when her mother told her that Dixie wasn't Dixie, but rather Di Henry, Krystal's former prison mate. Knowing this information could be of value to Adam, who suspected Dixie was an imposter, Babe approached her former father-in-law and offered to give him the goods that would expose Dixie in exchange for Adam using his influence to get Krystal out of prison. Adam agreed. All were shocked when Di was exposed, and still claimed to be Dixie. A DNA test backed up her statement.

The rivalry between JR and Jamie intensified. Babe continued to push Dixie to broker peace between the two to no avail. Realizing that Jamie's commitment to her was holding him back from his dream of a medical career, Babe decided to take action. She tried to convince JR that she was going to dump Jamie, but JR explicitly told her that he'd only let Jamie receive Phoebe's money and entrance into medical school if he dumped her. More resolute to give Jamie his dreams, Babe asked her new friend Josh Madden to stage an affair with her. With Amanda's help (Babe knew she was glad to speed along a Jamie/Babe breakup), Jamie walked in on Babe and Josh in bed. Babe put on the performance of her life as she told Jamie that she was bored with him and wanted to end things. Jamie didn't believe Babe's scheme, but was so furious with her for not trusting his decision to halt his medical dreams for a life with her that he ended their relationship.

Babe focused her attention on regaining custody of her son, deciding the easiest way to do it was to get JR to remarry her! Babe slowly began to work JR, pretending that she had unresolved feelings for him. Her plan began to work, as JR began to thaw towards Babe. However, the revelation that "Dixie" was truly Di Henry sent JR into a downward spiral. He began lashing out, and had Babe's custody of Little Adam revoked. An intoxicated JR told Babe he was taking their son out of the country, where Babe wouldn't see him for years. JR got behind the wheel of his car, and Babe tried to stop him. As they struggled for control of the car, JR hit Amanda. Babe stepped forward and took the blame for the accident, preventing JR from going to jail. This was a calculated move to earn JR's trust and it worked. JR continued to test Babe's loyalty, and she passed every test. JR confessed he was falling in love with Babe. Babe, happy everything was going according to her plan, told JR she was interested in seeing where a relationship could take them. Over time, Babe realized she was truly falling in love with JR.

Babe was shocked when Greenlee Lavery gave Babe her shares of Fusion, putting Babe into a business partnership with Kendall Hart, who loathes her. Things were blissful with Babe and JR until Janet Dillon kidnapped Babe and Little Adam. JR assumed Babe had been lying about her love, and had gone on the run with their son. Babe was rescued and JR's fears disproven, but it was an omen of things to come. Everyone was shocked when Dixie returned to town, very much alive. When JR learned that she had willfully stayed away for four years and wouldn't reveal why, he began to drink heavily and lash out. Distrusting everyone, he began to believe Babe really didn't love him, and was only using him to get custody of their son. In a moment of pure rage, JR pushed some construction materials over, hoping to crush Babe. Unfortunately, Kendall was caught instead. Babe slowly came to the terrible realization that her husband had tried to kill her.
